Solving
The Case of the Utility Clerks' Nightmare

Photos by Michelle Young. Report based on eyewitness accounts.

On March 18, 2003, Dan McFaull and his North Pacific Training and Peformance associate Jim Tallman presented Solving the Business Case to ISPI Vancouver. For background, please see the event bulletin.

Fog rolled in. It was Victorian London. In the light of the gas lamps, two murky figures emerged. The closer one with the bowler hat and cane clasped a medical bag. Then the taller man stepped forward, clay pipe in hand, and we noticed his deerstalker hat and tweed coat. As the fog thinned, our heads reeled. It was none other than the Great Detective himself, Sherlock Holmes! His companion, we surmised, was Dr. John H. Watson, retired from the British Army and Peshawar and the Afghan Wars.

Holmes and Watson talked about a "most perplexing case," which they aptly called "The Utility Clerks' Nightmare." The reality of the Plaza 500 setting began to creep in, and Holmes and Watson morphed into their 21st-century counterparts, Performance Detectives Dan McFaull and Jim Tallman. As the modern Holmes and Watson posed for a portrait, the participants in ISPI Vancouver's March 18 event delved into the clues of the mind-boggling case from the real-life files of the Performance Detectives.

One could feel the forensic brain power in action, but the mystery
was almost too ponderous for Trina Pouttu and her colleague,
Dr. Paula Weaver of the University of Texas at Arlington
(at bottom right), sleep-deprived from another case,

until Sherlock/Dan appeared in the nick of time.

Teaming up with the Performance Detectives, we soon turned their human performance technology challenge
into an HPT piece of cake. We celebrated with shared enthusiasm, re-energized and ready for any performance nightmare.
