A Review of
Coaching Conundrums with Cy Charney

By Sandra Koziol

[Cy Charney Resources Home]

If you walked into Cy Charney's "Coaching Conundrums" with many questions about coaching, you would leave with most of them answered. In the hour that he spoke, Cy shared his thoughts on many questions related to coaching:

  • What is coaching?
  • Who would be an ideal coach?
  • Who would be an ideal protégé?
  • What skills can we coach?
  • When should we coach?
  • Where should we coach?
  • Why coach?
  • How can I coach successfully?

The presentation started off by establishing a definition of coaching:
"It is the development of one person by another, through regular contact, that will guide and nurture the protégé toward a goal. The process will enable the protégé to make a greater contribution."

What followed was an interactive presentation that answered coaching conundrum questions, focusing on the attributes of great coaches, the roles of the coach, the phases of coaching relationships, and some practical tips on how to give advice. Attendees were given opportunities to share their thoughts. For example, they participated in tabletop discussions about what happens if the coach and protégé are similar or dissimilar in terms of personality and/or background.

Attendees were then invited to do a self-assessment using the LSI (Lifestyles Inventory). This self-assessment placed you on the LSI model and showed the degree to which you perceive yourself using constructive styles, passive/defensive styles, or aggressive/defensive styles. As he explained the model, Cy suggested that the most effective coaches have high scores operate mostly using constructive styles.

The session concluded with a video clip of a coaching session from the TV show Everybody Loves Raymond.

Guests and members left the session with a better understanding of corporate coaching in general. Additionally, those who completed the LSI self-assessment gained greater insights into their own style and suitability for the coaching profession.
