The Topic: Courage by Design - Creating Opportunities for Practitioners and Participants

What is courage and what does it have to do with Performance Technology?

Courage is an inner quality that becomes evident when you take action where each of the following three criteria are met: (i) there is an uncertain or unpredictable outcome; (ii) there is an emotion or feeling present that ranges somewhere between mild concern and terror (based on the perceived consequences of your efforts) and (iii) there is a positive value or belief which consciously or unconsciously compels you to act in spite of those consequences.

Another way to describe the outcome is "risky"! You have a sense of what you hope to accomplish--but there's no guarantee you'll do so. These types of outcomes are possibilities whenever you are designing an intervention, contracting with a client or delivering a program. They are present for your clients and their employees when they are deciding to use your services, participate in a program or work together to implement change.

What will you learn?

If you are willing to fully engage, there is the potential to learn:
  • How to identify opportunities where you may choose to exercise courage . . . or not
  • How to create opportunities in your interventions to allow participants to exercise courage . . . or not
  • What criteria to use when considering exercising personal courage or providing opportunities for others to do so
  • How to move yourself from unproductive worry to productive learning and action
