June
13th AGM Update
|

Dear
ISPI Vancouver Members:
We
have had an excellent year of programs and fun with our ISPI-Vancouver
Chapter. The volunteers that keep this organization hopping
are key to our success - Thank you all!
Our
current membership is at 122 people. It is a healthy size
and continues to attract from a cross section of professionals
in all areas of performance improvement and management. I
am very pleased with the strength of the executive nominees
for the coming year. They are motivated to continue the work
that keeps us engaged.
Last
year we increased dues to $95 for regular members and $65
for dual international & local. The increase has allowed
us to keep pace with our needs to automate our environment
and increase our use of technology to manage, take on-line
registrations and make payments with credit cards. This has
been a great success.
We
now face increasing catering costs for our hotel venue. In
2004 and 2005 we very carefully managed the venue to keep
costs low, although we still use those strategies the costs
are rising. To counter this, we are changing our by-laws to
allow us to be more flexible in meeting numbers. The executive
plans to continue to have 6 - 8 events per year and we will
be open to other opportunities and locations.
The
executive voted in January to discontinue a long practice
of granting life-long membership to Past Presidents. From
this presidency onward only as president and president-elect
are you given complementary membership. So with those cost
control measures in place we will continue to be the best
deal in town - and that is not a secret!
I
am looking forward to the next half of my term as president!

Podcasting

Podcasting
for Learning
by Leigh Anne McIntyre
Are
any of you out there finding it harder to keep up with all
the new technologies used these days for learning? When I
heard someone mention podcasting when discussing e-learning
options, my internal alarms went off. My ego was frantically
saying, "There is a whole new medium out there I know
nothing about? How can I be an effective solutions designer
if I do not know about this?". I immediately set out
to find out about using podcasting for learning. This turned
out to be more difficult than I initially thought. Apparently,
not many people are using podcasts for learning…yet.
For news releases, entertainment, and blogs-yes. But for e-learning?

Using
a Wiki for Performance Improvement

Timothy W. Spannaus, Ph.D.
Why
are wikis gaining in popularity, with articles appearing in
mainstream business press such as Business Week and
general information technology magazines? How can a wiki help
a performance technologist?

Virtual
Teamwork & Networking Across Cultures
|
|
Virtual
teamwork & networking accross the cultures: tools and
experiences
By
Mariano Bernardez
The
90's could be easily defined as the cradle of Drucker's "knowlege
society": the booming growth of the Internet and intranets,
the globalization of communications and trade, the change
in the traditional "assemby line" or " pyramidal"
models of organization to flatter, speedier and virtual ones;
the new tools and channels for on line communications, and
so on. Human performance will never be the same; neither the
"workplaces" or the processes of work.
The
transition to a team-based organization, well defined by Daniels
and Mathers, Mohrman, and others is on its way, and many new
companies are getting into the market with the new concepts
of teamworking and networking (the first thing you receive
as a new employee of Microsoft is a device to plug your PC
to the intranet and the Internet where the companies expect
their members to collaborate). Sun Systems issued a policy
of not using phones but e-mail to force the transition to
virtual work, and so on. But the new mindset requires still
some time to be reached, and there is and will be resistance
to the changes, fears and pitfalls. The incremental use of
Internet, teleconferencing and other virtual devices is not
a guarantee of having a "virtual organization" or
virtual teamwork.
