MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: LISA O'NEILL
Corporate Trainer, eBay Inc.
by Phil Mentacos, Editor - Member Spotlights

Lisa O'Neill is just about to go into her third year as a senior member of a dynamic training team at eBay's global customer support center in Burnaby. She has focused on Performance Improvement since 1995, when as an application specialist for Creo Products Inc. she was asked to move to their Product Training Group. Lisa has completed her Masters in Online Learning at Royal Roads University.

It was easy for me to start with Lisa as our first member spotlight, as I work with her, and have since the eBay support center first opened in March 2003. I can tell you that Lisa is quite the personality. Aside from her focus on training and performance improvement, she has one of the most diverse set of interests I have ever been exposed to. I've seen her walk into an ISPI Vancouver session, sit down at a table full of people deep in conversation (it could be about anything), and Lisa just slides right in with a full contribution to the discussion.

Now, our quick chat with Lisa:

What kind of work are you doing now in the performance improvement field?
I work for the eBay North American Support Center as a Trainer. For the past two years, my focus has been around New Hire Training for new support reps. The training involved technical skills on the computer, as well as soft skills around Diplomacy, Customer Service, and Service Quality.

How long have you been in the performance improvement field?
I have focused on Performance Improvement since 1995, when as an application specialist for Creo Products Inc. I was asked to move to their Product Training Group.

Is there anything you would like to share about your personal training and education that you have taken in the performance improvement field?
I chose to focus my Master's thesis on an applied project that dedicated our time to the pre-development work/schema for a learner-Centered EPSS. This path allowed me the opportunity to dedicate myself to Learner-Centered Instructional design. Much of the conference, course and self-study that followed opened me up to a much broader range of application for learner centered courseware truly focused on "leaving no learner behind". By delving deep into Electronic Performance Support Systems, it allowed me to shift some of my thought processes to consider just in time performance improvement.

What aspect of performance improvement are you most passionate about?
See above… Job Aids, online tools and resource development.

What has been your favourite project in performance improvement?
Building a virtual Printing Plant that took learners on a tour of the facility and imbedded Q&A throughout the tour. It allowed me the opportunity to utilize my passion for online learning/technology based training and create something that was both education and a lot of fun to tour.

What skill set have you built in performance improvement?
I have implemented and evaluated technical course curriculum and assessment methods; developed and delivered online courseware and blended training solutions; analyzed and revised provincial trades programs; designed, produced and managed multimedia publication projects; designed & developed electronic performance support.

How long have you been an ISPI Vancouver member?
I've attended random sessions off and on for a few years but full fledged membership came just a few months ago.

What are your favourite ISPI Vancouver sessions you've attended?
I did enjoy the session we attended on Surviving the Project. It ties back into my need for "props" while I'm engaged in the opportunity to discuss with my peers different way of overcoming challenges.

How are you keeping up with your professional development in the performance improvement field?
I'm looking very forward to attending the ISPI conference coming up in April. That should give me a good kick start for the year ahead.

What is/are your favourite websites for performance improvement information?
This is a trick question…: http://www.pignc-ispi.com/

Read any good books lately?
The Americans by Jack Kerouac
